And one day out of nowhere, your shiny black or brown hair color, pops out a single string of grey, YIKES! Let’s get in as to why gray hair emerges, mainly what are the causes of gray hair and whether you wish to embrace it or loath about the same. Here is everything you need to know about gray hair!
Why Does Hair Turn Gray?
There is no hair that “turns” gray. The argument behind this fact is that once a hair follicle produces hair, the color is set. So if a hair starts growing out as brown, red, black, or blond, it is going to be the same and never going to turn into gray. As with the process of aging, your hair follicles produce less color, so as your hair goes through its natural cycle of dying and regenerating, it is more probable that it shall grow gray by the beginning of the late ’30s.
1. Genetics as a Cause
Though, Genetics can play an important role when this starts. One of the main causes of gray hair is dependent on the genes you inherit. You can inherit the genes from either of your parents, so for easy understanding, if either your mom or dad went on to have gray hair at an early age, well you shall have that you might not wish (Comes in stress!)
2. Role of Stress
As for stress as a cause, being under it can’t turn your hair into gray. Stress only can trigger a condition that is called telogen effluvium which can be a cause of shedding of hair three times faster than the normal pace. The hair though grows back so it doesn’t lead to baldness. Stress also can initiate the process of losing melanin in your hair, as when it loses the former, the yellow hue of keratin is visible.
So to convene the main causes it could be said that the graying could be influenced mostly by genes you inherit from your parents. Albeit, stress might play its part in the process of the same. You should rather try looking at your past generational history of graying of hair as compared to predicting your stress levels.
3. Other Causes
While a lot of people develop “gray hair”, there are sometimes other reasons for the graying of hair, specifically when it arises at a young age.
Causes that might be heralded by gray hair include:
- Vitamin B¹² deficiency
- Neurofibromatosis: also called Von Recklinghausen’s disease, this group of inherited diseases causes tumors to grow along nerves and abnormal development of bones and skin
- Thyroid disease
- Vitiligo: This condition causes melanocytes that is where the cells at the base of hair follicles color are produced
- Alopecia areata: it is a disorder in which patches of hair may be suddenly lost, especially the colored hairs, this may in turn lead to overnight graying automatically due to the previously present grey and white hairs.
